# Trump Bans CNN, MSNOW, Politico from White House Over 'Fake News' - URL: https://twotakes.us/stories/trump-bans-cnn-msnow-politico-from-white-house-over-fake-news - Published: 2026-09-19T01:10:02.434892+00:00 - Topics: press-freedom, first-amendment, trump-administration, media-bias, white-house-press-corps ## What the left says - Barring news organizations from the White House because their coverage is unfavorable represents a direct assault on the First Amendment right of a free press to hold government accountable without government interference. - Trump offered no specific examples of false reporting to justify the ban, and courts have repeatedly ruled against similar retaliatory actions, including the AP's exclusion over the Gulf of Mexico naming dispute. - This move fits a broader pattern of the administration restricting press access, including taking control of the press pool from the White House Correspondents Association and limiting credentials at the Pentagon and Treasury Department. - Press freedom advocates and constitutional scholars warn this escalation mirrors tactics used against universities and law firms, using government power to punish institutions perceived as adversarial rather than addressing actual inaccuracies through correction or rebuttal. ## What the right says - The president has the authority to decide which outlets receive special access to the White House, and he is not obligated to grant credentialed proximity to organizations he believes have persistently misrepresented his administration. - CNN, MS NOW, and Politico have a well-documented history of coverage critics view as one-sided, including past reporting on the Charlottesville rally, Russia collusion claims, and the Hunter Biden laptop story that was later scrutinized or walked back. - Politico's past receipt of taxpayer-funded government subscriptions, since canceled, raises legitimate questions about financial ties between media outlets and the federal government that deserve scrutiny. - Trump maintains he supports a free press but believes outlets should meet a basic standard of fairness and accuracy, and he argues he is under no obligation to reward outlets he considers dishonest with privileged access to his workspace. ## Common ground - Trump announced via Truth Social on Friday that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico would be banned from the White House effective immediately, with other outlets potentially following. - Reporters from all three outlets remained on White House grounds after the announcement, and the practical mechanics of the ban were not immediately clear. - The move is expected to trigger First Amendment legal challenges, similar to the ongoing litigation over the Associated Press's exclusion from White House events in 2025. - This is not the first time the administration has restricted media access, following precedents involving the AP, the Pentagon, and the Treasury Department's G20 credentialing. ## Sources -
