Alaska ballot showing registered candidates and voting instructionsDid Peltola's Campaign Rig Alaska's Senate Ballot With a Fake Sullivan?
Intra-Party Split Detected
Most Republicans, including Trump, Dunleavy, and Cruz, demand criminal prosecution and removal of Peltola from the ballot. However, some conservative/center-right commentators (National Review, Slate-adjacent legal analysts) argue the alleged dirty trick, while troubling, doesn't provide the DOJ with legitimate legal grounds to block certification or overturn an election, creating a split over the appropriate remedy.
Left says
- •The Trump DOJ lawsuit seeking to delay certification of a legitimate election result represents a far graver threat to democracy than a campaign recruiting an extra candidate, since federal intervention to potentially overturn voters' choices is unprecedented and sets a dangerous precedent for contesting future races Republicans lose.
- •Alaska's ranked-choice voting system and open primary structure were specifically designed to allow multiple candidates from any background to run, and Dan J. Sullivan independently chose to enter the race and has denied coordinating with the Peltola campaign.
- •The Peltola campaign and DSCC have consistently and directly denied recruiting any candidate, and the allegations rest heavily on a single disgruntled former staffer who was fired and later attempted to retract her statements before publication.
- •Trump's calls for prosecution and ballot removal without presenting evidence of an actual crime, combined with his claim that Democrats committed perjury, reflect an alarming pattern of a sitting president trying to dictate electoral outcomes in a race that could determine Senate control.
Right says
- •A detailed New York Times investigation drawing on 12 sources, text messages, and internal documents substantiates what Alaska Republicans have alleged for months: that Democratic operatives deliberately engineered voter confusion to help Peltola win a seat she could not otherwise capture.
- •The scheme's clandestine nature, including an operative traveling under a false name and secret meetings at brew pubs to recruit a politically sympathetic namesake, demonstrates premeditated intent to deceive rather than an organic candidacy.
- •Alaska's governor and federal prosecutors are right to investigate whether this conduct violated state or federal law, since manipulating ballot composition to confuse voters strikes directly at the integrity of elections regardless of which party benefits.
- •Senator Dan Sullivan raised alarms about this suspicious namesake candidacy back in May, well before the Times report, showing Republicans identified the problem early and were vindicated rather than engaging in after-the-fact political spin.
Common Take
High Consensus- The New York Times investigation found that a Peltola staffer was instructed to search voter records for people named Dan Sullivan, an effort internally called the 'ballot composition project.'
- Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from Petersburg who previously voted Democrat, is a separate individual from incumbent Senator Dan S. Sullivan and appears on the same ranked-choice ballot.
- The Peltola campaign and the DSCC have formally and repeatedly denied recruiting any candidate into the race.
- Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy ordered a state investigation, and federal prosecutors are separately examining the matter, meaning the facts remain legally unresolved pending further investigation.
The Arguments
Right argues
A detailed New York Times investigation drawing on 12 sources, text messages, and internal documents substantiates that Democratic operatives deliberately engineered voter confusion, including an operative traveling under a false name to recruit a politically sympathetic namesake candidate.
Left counters
The core allegations rest heavily on a single disgruntled former staffer who was fired in August and attempted to retract her statements before publication, while the Peltola campaign and DSCC have consistently and directly denied recruiting any candidate.
Left argues
The Trump DOJ lawsuit seeking to delay certification of an election result represents a far graver and more unprecedented threat to democratic norms than a campaign recruiting an extra candidate, since it uses federal power to potentially overturn voters' actual choices.
Right counters
Seeking an investigation into whether ballot composition was fraudulently manipulated is not the same as overturning an election outcome; if the scheme deceived voters, scrutinizing the result before certification protects democratic integrity rather than undermining it.
Right argues
Senator Dan Sullivan raised alarms about the suspicious namesake candidacy back in May, well before the Times report, showing Republicans identified a genuine problem early rather than manufacturing a political attack after the fact.
Left counters
Alaska's ranked-choice voting and open primary system were specifically designed to allow multiple candidates from any background to run, and Dan J. Sullivan has stated he entered the race independently and denies coordinating with the Peltola campaign.
Left argues
Trump's calls for prosecution and ballot removal, including his claim that Democrats committed perjury, were made without presenting evidence of an actual crime, reflecting a troubling pattern of a sitting president trying to dictate the outcome of a race that could determine Senate control.
Right counters
The governor's order and DOJ's grand jury subpoenas are based on law enforcement review of the Times' sourced reporting, not merely Trump's rhetoric, and investigating potential violations of voters' rights is a legitimate state and federal function regardless of the president's public statements.
Right argues
The clandestine nature of the operation, including secret trips to remote communities and meetings at brew pubs under a false name, demonstrates premeditated intent to deceive voters rather than an organic, independent candidacy.
Left counters
Even if some Democratic operatives explored recruiting spoiler candidates, that does not establish Peltola's personal culpability or that her campaign committed any crime, since her former aide said Peltola was only 'aware' of the effort, not directly involved in orchestrating it.
Challenge Questions
These questions target genuine internal contradictions — meant to provoke honest reflection.
Right asks Left
“If the Times investigation's sourcing is strong enough that even a Democratic-leaning former campaign manager corroborated the scheme with texts and documents, why should her firing and attempted retraction discredit the reporting rather than simply explain why she spoke out?”
Left asks Right
“If Republicans believe ballot-composition tricks are a fundamental threat to election integrity regardless of party, how do they justify Trump's calls for Peltola's prosecution and removal from the ballot before any investigation has concluded or any charges have been filed?”
Outlier Report
Left Fringe
Figures like Senator Adam Schiff who frame this almost entirely as DOJ overreach and election subversion while minimizing the Peltola campaign's conduct represent perhaps 15-20% of the left; most Democrats privately acknowledge the recruitment scheme looks bad even while defending against Trump's remedy.
Right Fringe
Figures like Trump himself, who leaped to unsubstantiated claims of 'perjury' and demanded Peltola's removal from the ballot without a legal basis, represent an extreme escalation beyond even most Republicans like National Review's editorial board, which called the DOJ's legal theory weak; this maximalist faction is maybe 25-30% of the right.
Noise Assessment
High noise ratio - Trump's Truth Social posts and rally comments generate outsized media attention relative to the more measured positions of figures like Lisa Murkowski, who condemned the scheme as 'simply wrong' without endorsing disqualification, suggesting actual public sentiment is less polarized than the loudest voices on both sides.

Alaska Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy ordered the state to launch an investigation into whether a secret Democrat scheme to trick voters violated state laws and should trigger civil or criminal charges. The governor’s move comes on the heels of an explosive report from The New York Times exposing how Democrat operatives secretly manufactured an operation ...
In the summer of 2025, a staffer for Mary Peltola, the Alaska Democrat who was eyeing a run for Senate, received unusual instructions from top campaign aides: Find as many people named Dan Sullivan in Alaska as you can. The staffer complied, combing through voter records to produce a list of Dan Sullivans from across the state.
Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., accused President Donald Trump's Justice Department of trying to subvert elections through its lawsuit over Alaska's unusual Senate ballot, even as Republicans allege Democrats have propped up a Senate candidate with the same name as the GOP nominee to confuse voters. Sen. Dan S. Sullivan, R- Alaska, is running against Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., who has no party affiliation. State courts ultimately allowed the second Dan Sullivan to remain on the ballot. Schiff argued the Justice Department has no business stepping into a matter Alaska's courts have already settled. Republicans contend Daniel Sullivan entered the race to draw votes away from the incumbent and help former Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola — a claim the now- Senate candidate and her campaign deny.
Democrat Mary Peltola's Senate campaign and national Democrats are denying a new investigation from The New York Times reporting that they worked together to recruit candidates in an effort to pull votes from Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan in Alaska. The Times report, published Wednesday, cites 12 sources and references text messages and documents showing that Peltola campaign aides, the campaign's lawyers and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) staffers were involved in pushing other candidates, including Daniel J. Sullivan, to run.
