Man in red jacket and green vest outdoors, appears to be Dan Sullivan Jr.NYT: Peltola Campaign Secretly Recruited Spoiler Named 'Dan Sullivan'
Intra-Party Split Detected
Most Democrats (Peltola campaign, DSCC, Booker, Schiff) deny the scheme and dismiss it as a distraction, but former Peltola campaign manager Elisa Rios broke ranks by telling the NYT Peltola was 'definitely aware' of the effort, before later attempting to retract her comments.
Left says
- •The Peltola campaign and DSCC have categorically denied recruiting either Sullivan or coordinating the alleged scheme, and no court filing has established their direct involvement.
- •Sen. Murkowski and others note the Alaska Supreme Court already settled the ballot eligibility question, making the DOJ's last-minute lawsuit and Trump's intervention look like an attempt to preemptively delegitimize a potential Democratic win.
- •Trump's calls to prosecute Peltola and strip her from the ballot before any legal process has run its course raise serious due-process concerns and echo past efforts to challenge election results he doesn't like.
- •Democrats point out Republicans have their own history of recruiting spoiler candidates, including GOP support for a jailed Democrat's ballot challenge against Peltola in 2024, suggesting selective outrage.
Right says
- •A detailed New York Times investigation, based on 12 sources, text messages, and internal documents, describes a coordinated 'ballot composition project' involving Peltola's lawyers, campaign aides, and DSCC staff to recruit namesake and spoiler candidates.
- •An operative reportedly traveled Alaska under a fake name to recruit the second Dan Sullivan, a retired teacher who had donated to Peltola and briefly registered Republican just before the filing deadline, raising questions about his independence.
- •Peltola's former campaign manager said Peltola was 'definitely aware' of the recruitment effort even if not directly running it, undercutting the campaign's blanket denials.
- •Republicans argue this amounts to deliberate voter deception in a race that could decide Senate control, and they want accountability through DOJ investigation and possible prosecution.
Common Take
High Consensus- The New York Times investigation, citing 12 sources and internal documents, is the origin of the allegations against the Peltola campaign.
- A candidate named Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher from Petersburg, is on the ballot alongside incumbent Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan.
- The Peltola campaign and the DSCC have both issued formal denials of involvement in recruiting the second Sullivan.
- The Alaska Senate race is considered pivotal to control of the chamber, raising the stakes around any claims of ballot manipulation.
The Arguments
Right argues
A detailed New York Times investigation—based on 12 sources, text messages, and internal documents—found that Peltola's lawyers, campaign aides, and DSCC staff coordinated a 'ballot composition project' to recruit namesake and spoiler candidates, including an operative who traveled Alaska under a false name.
Left counters
No court filing or legal proceeding has established direct involvement by Peltola or her official campaign, and the campaign and DSCC have categorically and repeatedly denied coordinating or recruiting either Sullivan.
Left argues
The Alaska Supreme Court already resolved the ballot eligibility question, so the DOJ's eleventh-hour lawsuit and Trump's calls for prosecution look like an attempt to preemptively delegitimize the election before results are even known.
Right counters
The DOJ lawsuit is specifically about preserving the ability to investigate potential fraud if the race is close, not about overturning a settled ballot-access ruling, and the new Times reporting provides fresh evidence that wasn't before the state court when it made its eligibility decision.
Right argues
Peltola's own former campaign manager said Peltola was 'definitely aware' of the recruitment effort, which undercuts the campaign's blanket denial of any involvement and suggests the denials are parsed too narrowly to be fully honest.
Left counters
That same former campaign manager was fired amid a staff shakeup and attempted to retract her comments before publication, raising real questions about her credibility and motives as a disgruntled former employee.
Left argues
Republicans have their own history of propping up spoiler or confusing candidates—including backing a jailed Democrat's ballot challenge against Peltola in 2024—making the sudden outrage over spoiler tactics look selective rather than principled.
Right counters
Even if both parties have used spoiler tactics before, that doesn't excuse or cancel out a documented scheme to recruit someone sharing an opponent's literal name specifically to confuse voters on the ballot, which is a uniquely deceptive tactic distinct from ordinary multi-candidate strategy.
Right argues
The recruited candidate, Dan J. Sullivan, had donated to Peltola and briefly switched his registration to Republican right before the filing deadline, a pattern that strongly suggests he was not an independent actor but a recruited spoiler.
Left counters
Dan J. Sullivan has consistently maintained he ran independently and later changed his registration to undeclared, and one individual's personal voting history and choices don't by themselves prove campaign-level coordination or control.
Challenge Questions
These questions target genuine internal contradictions — meant to provoke honest reflection.
Right asks Left
“If the Alaska Supreme Court's ballot ruling was made without the benefit of the text messages, documents, and 12 sources the Times later uncovered, how can that ruling be treated as having fully 'settled' the underlying question of whether voters were deliberately deceived?”
Left asks Right
“If the core evidence against Peltola rests heavily on a fired former campaign manager who later tried to retract her own statements, how confident can Republicans be in calling for prosecution and ballot removal before any court has tested that evidence?”
Outlier Report
Left Fringe
Figures like Sen. Cory Booker calling the story 'much ado about nothing' represent a dismissive minority (~15-20% of the left) who flatly deny any significance to the NYT findings rather than engaging with the substance; most Democrats privately acknowledge the optics are bad even while defending Peltola's denials.
Right Fringe
Figures like Sen. Ted Cruz and Trump himself demanding criminal prosecution and ballot removal before any court ruling represent a more aggressive fringe (~25-30% of the right) pushing for extrajudicial remedies; many mainstream Republicans and legal conservatives (and even Sen. Murkowski) are more cautious, noting the Alaska Supreme Court already settled ballot eligibility.
Noise Assessment
High noise ratio — Trump's Truth Social posts and perjury/fraud accusations are performative escalations disconnected from any actual legal finding, and cable news framing (Fox vs. CNN panel debates) amplifies partisan temperature far beyond what the documentary evidence in the NYT piece actually establishes.

Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola's allies worked with operatives trying to recruit spoiler candidates into the Alaska race to siphon votes from Republican Sen. Dan S. Sullivan.
Alaskans for Mary said it "has no involvement with either Sullivan campaign."
Operatives aligned with Democratic Senate nominee Mary Peltola spent months recruiting candidates in an effort to dilute support for Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan on Alaska's crowded ballot, according to The New York Times.
In the summer of 2025, a staffer for Mary Peltola, the Alaska Democrat who was eyeing a run for Senate, received unusual instructions from top campaign aides: Find as many people named Dan Sullivan in Alaska as you can. The staffer complied, combing through voter records to produce a list of Dan Sullivans from across the state.
Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., accused President Donald Trump's Justice Department of trying to subvert elections through its lawsuit over Alaska's unusual Senate ballot, even as Republicans allege Democrats have propped up a Senate candidate with the same name as the GOP nominee to confuse voters. Sen. Dan S. Sullivan, R- Alaska, is running against Daniel J. Sullivan Jr., who has no party affiliation. State courts ultimately allowed the second Dan Sullivan to remain on the ballot. Schiff argued the Justice Department has no business stepping into a matter Alaska's courts have already settled. Republicans contend Daniel Sullivan entered the race to draw votes away from the incumbent and help former Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola — a claim the now- Senate candidate and her campaign deny.
Democrat Mary Peltola's Senate campaign and national Democrats are denying a new investigation from The New York Times reporting that they worked together to recruit candidates in an effort to pull votes from Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan in Alaska. The Times report, published Wednesday, cites 12 sources and references text messages and documents showing that Peltola campaign aides, the campaign's lawyers and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) staffers were involved in pushing other candidates, including Daniel J. Sullivan, to run.
